Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Little Bears Day Nursery of Milton Keynes, our activities and schedule are guided by the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We use these principles to provide your child with an engaging and challenging space in which they can learn, develop and grow, whilst having fun.

What is EYFS?

  • Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and the world around them. Development is not an automatic process, however, it depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.
  •  Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in their early years, and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is vitally important. It essential that we work in a strong partnership with parents/carers and we deliver high quality early learning together, providing the foundation that children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.
  • The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all early year's providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.
  •  Our practice is designed to ignite your child’s passion to learn, develop and grow in all of the following seven areas.

Prime Areas – Children should mostly develop in these areas first:
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language
Specific Areas – As children grow the Prime Areas will help them to develop in the four Specific Areas
  •  Literacy
  •  Mathematics
  • Understand the World
  •  Expressive Arts and Design

Early Years and the Outdoor Environment

All children have access to their outdoor learning and development environment and all pre-school children have access at all times as children can safely "free flow" from their indoor area to the outdoor area as and when they choose.
 
The outdoor area is a mirror image of our indoor learning environment, the children can make choices with all the equipment and they have access to writing material, problem solving, and exploration and investigation as well as creative activities, such as sand and water, a mud kitchen and willow tunnel, together with their allotment, sensory and physical – this list is not exhaustive!
